ENG4433 – Between Two Cultures: Indian Authors Who Write in English
Course description
Course content
Analysis of several novels and short stories by Indian authors who write in English and who can therefore be said to be relating to two very different cultures. The contrast between Indian and British culture is a very important theme in these works. Even though the main emphasis of the course wil be on the interpretation of individual texts with regard to themes, structure, imagery etc. it will also be important to analyse how each author deals with the question of cultural identity and the legacy from the colonial past.
Learning outcome
After completing this course you will have:
- developed insight into the works of several Indian authors who write in English;
- acquired analytical and critical abilities in confrontation with postcolonial texts.
Admission

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Admission to the master program in literature, LAP or other suitable master programs.
Teaching
Seminar, two hours per week for ten weeks.
80% obligatory attendence and active participation is required, e.g. in the form of one or more oral presentations.
Examination
A term paper of 10 standard pages (topic to be decided between teacher and student).

Language of examination
English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Marks will be published on Studentweb no later than three weeks after the submission date/exam.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
