NORAM4505 – Movies and American Culture
Course description
Course content
This course is a study of movies – as historical and cultural artefacts of an industry which is seen as quintessentially American. This course will examine both the history of that industry and the movies it created. We will examine the constraints imposed by political and social events and study how movies construct and contest the idea of America.
Learning outcome
After completing this course you will have:
- learned to analyze movies as cultural productions;
- learned how the history of the motion picture industry reflects and relates to developments within American national culture, politics, and history.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Admission to the North America Area studies Master program or LAP.
Recommended previous knowledge
The course assumes a good proficiency in written and oral English
Teaching
The course is taught throughout the semester with 2 hours seminar per week for 14 weeks, 28 hours in all.
Attendance is an obligatory class requirement (80%).
Students are required to write an essay (5 standard pages) at an appointed time.The essay must be approved by the course teacher for the student to be allowed to take the exam. Students have to fulfill all the requirements in order to sit the exam.
Examination
The exam consists of a three-day take home exam.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
The results will be published on the Studentweb within three weeks after the exam.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
