MCT4033 ¨C Applied MCT Project

Course content

The aim of the course is to carry out a music technological project in a real-world setting with an external partner or stakeholder. The project should have a societal, research or industrial impact. The problem at hand could be of a non-musical nature, and would then require students to apply their music-technological knowledge in new and creative ways.

Learning outcome

Having completed the course, the student will:?

• be able to plan and carry out a real-world project in a multicultural and interdisciplinary team.
• be able to identify and understand the problem at hand and develop an appropriate solution to the problem.
• have hands-on experience in working in a project team and communicating with external partners or stakeholders.
• be familiar with structures, tools and issues affecting the management of a real-world project.
• be able to collaborate in teams to produce structured reports and deliver organized presentations on design and implementation activities, to both partners and stakeholders.
• be able to critically reflect on all aspects of the project development process, and on the practical, social, ethical and aesthetic qualities of the developed solution.

Formal prerequisite knowledge

Completion of the course MCT4001 ¨C Sound and Music Programming or equivalent documented competencies.

Overlapping courses

• 10 credits overlap with MCT4031 ¨C Applied MCT Project 1 (discontinued).

Teaching

The course uses a flipped classroom model and blended learning methods, and includes:

• Video lectures, readings and assignment in preparation for the workshops.

• Planning, execution and monitoring of a semester group project.

• 4 workshops of 2 hours early in the semester to facilitate the project development.

• 5 workshops of 2 hour throughout the semester for the presentation of progress.

• Regular fortnightly meetings with the external partner and/or internal mentor.

Compulsory activities

• Participation in 7 out of 9 workshops.

• Complete in groups two qualifying project assignments.

Information about assignments and the deadlines are available in Canvas. Students have to hand in the assignments within the given deadline, and are responsible for familiarizing with the requirements for the compulsory activities.

The compulsory activities are only valid within the current semester. All compulsory activities must be approved in order to sit for the exam. Students are responsible to keep track of registered absences and check that everything has been approved.

Examination

Group presentation?(50%)?

The presentation summarizes the problem addressed by the team in the project, including conceptual, technical and aesthetic aspects of the proposed solution, achieved objectives and deliverables, details on the project execution and organizational challenges.

Group report (50%)?

The report documents the project deliverables produced by the team and it includes personal reflections on the project execution, outcomes, and collaboration in interdisciplinary settings. Each group member contributes to the body text of the report with up to 3000 words.

All the members of the group receive the same grade.

Students need to pass both parts of the exam in the same semester to pass the course.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
