ISSN0111 – Intensive Elementary Spoken Norwegian
Course description
Course content
This course focuses on spoken Norwegian, with extensive practice in basic communicative speech functions, such as greetings, asking for and providing information, and expressing opinions and feelings. Topics are centred around daily life (family, home, shopping, food, etc.). The main features of Norwegian phonetics and grammar are also central to the course.
Learning outcome
To develop hands on communicative competency for various social settings and contexts. To develop receptive as well as productive skills in Norwegian. This includes an ability to understand clearly spoken Norwegian, to pronounce Norwegian in a way that does not interfere with communication, to talk about subjects related to everyday life, and to express thoughts and opinions, albeit simply. To read texts and to write simply about topics dealt with in the course. To know the basic rules of Norwegian grammar.

Prerequisites
Recommended previous knowledge
No previous knowledge of Norwegian language is necessary for this beginner's course.
Teaching
26 classes, 3 hours daily (10:15-13:00), Monday to Friday for six weeks. Classroom sessions include instruction, language laboratory and extensive group work. Field experiences (visits to local sights, cafés, shops) are integrated into the exercises.
Daily attendance in this course is expected of all students. Admission to take the final exam requires a minimum attendance of 75%.

Examination
The exam will consist of an oral examination that counts for 100% of the grade.
Unlike course ISSN0110, which has both a written and an oral examination, this course has an oral examination only. Students who wish to take ISSN0120 must take a placement test to qualify for admission to the next level.
Detailed information about the exams will be published on the ISS website in the week preceding the exams.

Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Examination results are available three weeks after the exam, at the latest. The student must contact the ISS office directly to find out the results. A transcript of final grades will be sent by mail to all course participants.
Explanations and appeals
An explanation of the grade is a formal process that is meant to help the student decide whether to appeal the grading of an examination. It is not meant as a form of feedback for an exam. An explanation can be requested after you have received your grade through official channels, i.e., your transcripts or posted grade lists.
To request an explanation of your grade, you must write to ISS Office (by email or in a letter) and give the title of the course in question. The ISS Office sends the request to the course leader who provides the ISS Office with an explanation for the grade to be sent to the student.
Resit an examination
It is not possible to arrange for a late exam, a make-up exam, or to re-take the exam without taking the course again.
Withdrawal from an examination
A student can sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must hand in the Course Withdraw form to the ISS Reception at least two weeks prior to the day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.

Students who need a specially adapted exam must submit a Request for Special Examination Form along with medical documentation to the ISS reception two weeks before the exam.
Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
