Course content
This course gives a simple and popular overview of astronomy/astrophysics. The main?emphasis?is on?recent results in this rapidly developing field.
Learning outcome
After completing this course, you will be able to:
- describe the historical development of the heliocentric world view.
- explain phenomena such as as solar and lunar eclipses, and the tides.
- describe?the solar system and the different classes of objects belonging to it, and use models to describe how it and other planetary systems are?formed.
- understand the sun and other stars, and discuss their formation and evolution.
- use simple formulas to understand exoplanets, black holes and cosmology.
- describe the Big Bang model of the evolution of the Universe, and discuss the arguments for dark matter and dark energy.
Admission to the course

The course has a max capacity of 600 students. Based on experience, there is generally room for everyone who applies for admission to the course within the deadline.

This course has a final written exam, 2 hours,?which?counts 100 % towards the final grade.

Approved electronic calculator. The calculator in Inspera will be available during the exam.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in Norwegian. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F?is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Resit an examination
This course is taught during both spring and autumn semesters, and therefore does not offer a postponed examination.
