LSI4005 – Introduction to innovation in life science

Course content
This introductory course aims to increase awareness of opportunities in life science innovation and entrepreneurship. The course will provide a general understanding of the concept of innovation trough current theories and cases from the real world (companies within life sciences). The course will focus on the discovery process, i.e. how to identify the attractiveness of ideas in the innovation process, how to formulate and present ideas clearly and how to protect the ideas. In addition, the course will provide an introduction to interdisciplinary team learning and collaboration in life science.
Learning outcome
After completing the course you will have the following competencies:
- A broad understanding of the concept of innovation in life science.
- Basic skills for innovation strategy formulation including defining the problem, the need and the solution.
- Skills to recognize key drivers of innovation in life science (research vs needs based) and have developed a forward thinking and innovation focused mindset
- Knowledge about frameworks for interdisciplinary team learning and developed collaboration skills by working in interdisciplinary teams.
- Basic knowledge about types of intellectual property rights and understand different patent strategies
- Skills to communicate a value proposition that describes the need, approach, benefit and competition of an identified idea.

This course is part of the Life Science Innovation (honours certificate).

Teaching
The teaching consists of problem-based real world cases and oral presentations, lectures and flipped classroom, pitches from industry/partners and a group innovation project.
Attendance at the first lecture is mandatory. You will loose your seat in the course if you do not show up or contact us on studieinfo@mn.uio.no before the first lecture starts.?
Attendance at 80 percent of the course and compulsory submissions must be approved to pass the exam.
Access to teaching:?A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Compulsory participation and approved assignments are valid for 1 year.
Examination
Group innovation project presented at the end of the course, which counts 100 % towards the final grade.
For admission to the group innovation project presentation, the project assignment must be approved.

Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
