FRM-KJM9050 – Bioanalytical Chemistry I: Advanced Separation Methods and Bioanalysis
Course description
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
FRM-KJM9050 focuses on the most important aspects in all steps of an analytical method to determine biological active compounds (endogeneous compounds, environmental pollution, drugs etc.) in various biological matrices (like serum, urine, cell culture) and environmental samples (surface water).
Learning outcome
The course discusses the following topics:
- composition of various sample matrices (biological and environmental) together with their analytical limitations
- most used sample preparation techniques like liquid-liquid and solid phase extraction (both off-line and on-line)
- advanced liquid chromatography, column technology, stationary phases and miniaturization
- LC-MS: ionization, analysis, detection and mass spectrum interpretation
- LC-MS based doping analysis
- present and discuss scientific articles in the field
Admission to the course
PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.
If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.
PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.
Recommended previous knowledge
Analytical chemistry corresponding to FRM2010 – Quality Control of Pharmaceutical ingredients (discontinued) and FRM3030 – Use of Drugs, Part III (discontinued) (for pharmacy students) or KJM2400 – Analytical Chemistry I and KJM3400 – Analytical Chemistry II - Separation Methods?(for chemistry students).

Teaching
There will be 11 days of lectures and colloquia. PhD students need to present and discuss at least two recent scientific publications which will be handed out on the course (mandatory). The presentations have to be approved before you can attend the final exam. There will be no laboratory training.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
The course can be canceled if the number of students enrolled is low.
Examination
Final exam counts 100 %. Depending on the number of students, the final exam will either be a 4 hours long written digital exam or a 45 minutes long oral exam.
The presentation has to be approved before you can attend the final exam.
Digital examination
The written examination is conducted in the digital examination system Inspera. You will need to familiarize yourself with the digital examination arrangements in Inspera.
Read more about written examinations using Inspera.
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt. It will also be counted as one of the three?attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses:
Examination support material
As of 1 August, 2016, the use of own calculators is no longer permitted. Casio FX-991EX calculators are handed out to all exam candidates at the beginning of the exam.
Language of examination
You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.
Resit an examination
This course offers both postponed and resit of examination. Read more:
