FRM4060 – Preparatory course for research in pharmaceutics

Course content

The course provides a theoretical and practical introduction to experimental methods important for characterization of pharmaceutical preparations. In addition, a review of selected methods for preparing of nanoparticulate formulations is offered.

Learning outcome

At the end of the course the students are expected to have acquired a

  • broad knowledge of methods for determining the release rate from pharmaceutical formulations
  • sufficient practical skills to set up and conduct release studies with photometric analysis of the concentration on their own
  • broad knowledge about preparation and characterization of bio-relevant media
  • thorough knowledge and practical experience with methods for characterization of nanoparticles or photochemical degradation
  • knowledge about and proficiency in critical reading and evalua-tion of research papers dealing with development, production and characterization of pharmaceutical formulations

Admission to the course

The course is primarily open to students who have been admitted to the Department?of Pharmacy at the University of Oslo. If there are places available, others may also apply to take the course, provided their academic background is adequate.

Formal prerequisite knowledge

The course is only available to students who have:

  • passed their pharmacy apprenticeship and have passed all previous pharmacy courses or have the equivalent within pharmaceutics analysis
  • passed the mandadory safety courses (HMS-courses) required by students on the 5-year master`s program in Pharmay

Overlapping courses

Teaching

The course is taught over a four-week period with teaching three days per. week. Some of the teaching will be optional, estimating that the total burden will amount to about 9 days teaching. Instructions are provided in the form of lectures, seminars, compulsory practical laboratory assignments and independent study. Compulsory lab reports and presentation of scientific papers are also included. The laboratory assignments, reports and presentations must document that the student has acquired the expected knowledge and skills.

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Completed and approved presentation of a scientific paper and laboratory assignments and laboratory reports are valid for 3?years.

Examination

The course is assessed as pass/fail based on completion of:

  • presentation of 1 scientific paper
  • completed and approved 3 laboratory assignments and reports

Language of examination

You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.??
