Welcome to FYS-STK and a new semester
Dear all,
first a warm welcome to all of you. We hope you will enjoy the course. Our first regular lecture is Thursday August 25 and you find the link to the educational material at the GitHub link https://github.com/CompPhysics/MachineLearning, and for more easy display of the weekly lecture slides, we recommend the weekly overview link here https://compphysics.github.io/MachineLearning/doc/web/course.html.
Our first lab session is Wednesday August 24 (tomorrow) and the aim is to present to those of you who need a repetition of Python and programming some basic libraries we will use in this course. Each lab group last two hours. The first hour will be dedicated to Python libraries and how to install them and a quick reminder on programming. The second hour will be dedicated to version control software like Git and how to use repositories like GitHub/Gitlab and other more technical issues. Since we have not had any lectures yet, the first lab session is meant to get you started with different software and tools that are useful for this course.
You can find more information about these topics at the slides for this week https://compphysics.github.io/MachineLearning/doc/pub/week34/html/week34.html.
If you wish to brush your computing knowledge etc the material at https://github.com/ComputationalScienceUiO/RefreshProgrammingSkills can be useful.
The lab will take place in room F?397 and F?434 at the Department of Physics. The sessions are Wednesdays 815-10, 1015-12, 12.15-14 and 14.15-16 and Thursdays 8.15-10 and 10.15-12. In addition we have reserved time for self studies Wednesdays and Thursdays 16-18. For tomorrow's sessions there is no digital lab, but else we offer also digital lab sessions throughout the semester.
This first week the plans for the lectures on Thursday and Friday are at https://compphysics.github.io/MachineLearning/doc/LectureNotes/_build/html/schedule.html#week-34-august-22-26
We recommend using the jupyter-book at https://compphysics.github.io/MachineLearning/doc/LectureNotes/_build/html/intro.html, this contains all teaching material with links to the weekly schedule and more.
We look forward to meet you all and wish you the very best for the semester,
Morten, for the teaching team (Benoosh, Frida, Ida, Joao, Morten, Sigurd, Stian and ?yvind)
