FYS1210 – Elementary Electronics with Project Work

Course content

During the course, you will get an introduction to electronics and how to build and analyze basic circuits. You will learn about the functioning and structure of key components used in electronics today, passive and active, including semiconductors. Central to the course is laboratory work where students get hands-on experience with electronics through construction and measurement of physical circuits as well as simulation of circuits using simulation tools.

Learning outcome

After completing this course, you are able to:

  • describe the behaviour and characteristics of passive electronic components such as resistors, capacitors, and coils.
  • describe the behaviour of semiconductors and how they are made
  • describe how semiconductor and operational amplifiers can be used in amplifiers, logic circuit elements, and sensors.
  • analyze and simulate simple electrical circuits.
  • explain simple frequency filters and how they are calculated.

Admission to the course

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

Special admission requirements

In addition to fulfilling the?Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2

And in addition one of these:

  • Physics (1+2)
  • Chemistry (1+2)
  • Biology (1+2)
  • Information technology (1+2)
  • Geosciences (1+2)
  • Technology and theories of research (1+2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by?equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies?(in Norwegian).

Formal prerequisite knowledge

The following HSE courses must also?be passed before the first mandatory lab teaching in FYS1210:?

  • High school physics

Teaching

The first lecture is mandatory. If you are unable to attend, the Department has to be informed in advance (e-mail studieinfo@fys.uio.no), or else you will lose your place in the course.

The course runs over a full semester and includes:

  • 3 hours of lectures per week?
  • 2 hours of seminars and exercises per week.
  • 5 hours of mandatory laboratory work per week
  • a project assignment in experimental physics (about 20 hours)

8 laboratory assignments and one?project assignment must be approved before you can sit the final exam.?Regulations for mandatory assignments can be found here.

To participate in the mandatory laboratory work you have to pass the following courses in advance:

You have to bring documentation that you have passed HMS0505 – Electricity Safety?when you meet at the first mandatory lab in FYS1210.

As?the?teaching involves laboratory and/or fieldwork, you should consider taking out separate travel and personal risk insurance.?Read about your insurance cover as a student.

Examination

  • Final oral or written exam, which counts?100 % towards the?final grade.?

The form of the exam is decided by the number of students signed up for the course after the registration deadline.

This course has 8 laboratory assignments and one?project assignment that must be approved before you can take the final?exam.

No examination support material is allowed.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a?postponed exam?at the beginning of the next semester.

New examinations?are offered at the beginning of the next semester for students who do not successfully complete the exam during the previous semester.

We do not offer a re-scheduled exam for students who withdraw during the exam.
