Exam 2021

The FYS4130 exam 2021 will be held as an oral exam. The plan is to hold it digitally on zoom.

Exam format: Each exam lasts 25 minutes. There will be three persons present: the candidate(you), censor(Vidar) and examiner(Olav). The exam begins by you showing your face and legitimation on zoom. Then after a few introductory words the examiner starts by asking a question, which you answer.

You will be required to show that you know how to do brief calculations, thus you need to find a way to write things down and show it on zoom. You have several options to do that: For instance use your smart phone as an extra participant (in addition to your computer) to film what you write on a paper (for help on this option, see page 5 of this document (in Norwegian)), or use a digital tool, or otherwise film what you write on a blackboard/whiteboard or paper.  It is important that you test these technical things beforehand, including how to share screen and use your pad/camera. Feel free to test it on each other. A "trial" zoom-exam (for everybody) where you can test your equipment will be arranged  on Wednesday May 12. at 14:15-16:00. The proper zoom-link will be put on Canvas replacing the ordinary lecture link(*).

It is not allowed to use any form of aids like notes with formulas, books etc. on the exam.  If there is something you don't remember, say what it is, and we will help you with it.

The questions can be about any part of the curriculum. With the short time allowed there is no way to cover large portions of the curriculum. If you feel that you cannot answer at all, you are allowed to ask for a new question, however that will count as a don't know answer (zero) in the evaluation of the final grade. When it becomes clear to the examiner that you know the answer (or not), you will get a new question. It is of course positive if you can answer many questions correctly.

Grades: The grade will be given on the scale A-F.  It will be available at the earliest about an hour after the last candidate. For those of you who cannot wait for the result to appear on student-web; send an email to sylju@fys.uio.no.

Time and dates: The exams will be held on the dates May 31., June 1. and June 2.  When we know exactly how many are eligible for the exam (after oblig 2, probably May 10 (*)) a sign-up sheet will be posted where you can choose among available time slots.

Prior to the exam a zoom link will be distributed. When you join, you will be put in a waiting room. You will be admitted when it is your turn.

Preparation: In addition to reading the book and looking over the problem sets and obligs, it is a good idea to prepare for the exam by doing old exam sets. Although those were made for written school/home exams, the level of what you are expected to know at the oral exam should be the same as on these previous exams.
