FYS9310 – Material Science of Semiconductors

Course content

The course is intended for students interested in solid state physics and electronics.

The course starts with an introduction and repetition of the main principles in solid state physics. This will be followed by more detailed basics and fundamentals of semiconductors. Electronic band structure in real semiconductors, both 1D, 2D, and 3D (bulk) materials, will be considered. Diffusion in semiconductors plays an important role in semiconductor technology,?and different diffusion mechanisms will be reviewed.

The section on fundamentals will be followed by modules on practical application of the theory to semiconductor technology. Firstly, the methods for synthesis and processing of semiconductors will be considered. Then, a number of characterization techniques will be reviewed.

Learning outcome

After completing the course, you are able to:

  • explain the fundamentals of semiconductor materials, as well as the practical methods to synthesize and analyze them.
  • have an overview of the material basis for modern electronic and information technologies.
  • describe the correlations between composition, structure, dimensionality, and optoelectronic properties of solid materials.
  • navigate in the wide spectrum of practical techniques for the synthesis and processing of materials.
  • to select relevant methods for the analysis of material properties in your future research or innovations.

Teaching

This course has?4 hours of teaching per week. The main form of teaching is lectures.

This course has mandatory exercises that must be approved before you can sit the final?exam:

  • a 45-minute?oral presentation on a given topic?
  • 20-minute oral presentation on a chosen topic?
  • a written report on a given topic

Examination

  • Final oral exam which counts 100% towards the final grade.

This course has mandatory exercises that must be approved before you can sit the final?exam.

It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: FYS4310 – Material Science of Semiconductors

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a?postponed exam?at the beginning of the next semester.

New examinations?are offered at the beginning of the next semester for students who do not successfully complete the exam during the previous semester.

We do not offer a re-scheduled exam for students who withdraw during the exam.
