FYS9420 – Experimental Techniques in Porous and Complex Systems
Course description
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
The course contains four projects that will give students introduction to important experimental techniques in the field of condensed matter physics. The course will be adapted to the center of excellence PoreLab with a special focus on porous media physics. The teaching is based on four projects in which the students apply techniques on realistic problems in condensed matter physics.
Learning outcome
After completing the course:
- you should know how a PID controller works in an experimental setup with a particular focus on temperature control. You have experience with how the temperature in a system can be controlled.
- you know the theory of dynamic light scattering and have experience in using light scattering to study diffusing particles and particles in a convective velocity field. You have experience in using dynamic light scattering to measure viscosity and the particles' diffusion constant and size.
- you have experience in setting up a 2D experiment for two-phase flow in porous media, and you are able to perform image analysis to characterize the structure and the dynamics. You know fundamental mechanisms for two-phase flow in porous media and how numerical models can be used to understand the observed pattern formations.
- you will have experience in performing a porous media experiment at the NTNU Porelab node.
- you have acquired skills in collaborating in groups with other students.
- you have learned to carry out research projects near the research front and to write a scientific report.
Admission to the course
PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through?Studentweb.
If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.
PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must?apply for a position as a visiting student?within a given deadline.
Recommended previous knowledge
Overlapping courses
- 10 credits overlap with FYS4420 – Experimental Techniques in Porous and Complex Systems.
Teaching
The teaching consists of four project assignments and includes approximately 4 hours of lectures before you carry out each of the project assignments. Each project assignment amounts to 1-2 full working days in the laboratory. You must write a mandatory research report for each project assignment.
A presentation of an experimental scientific article published in the last 10 years must be completed and approved before you can?sit the final exam.
At least one of the project assignments will be conducted at the SFF PoreLab node at NTNU in Trondheim. Travel expenses will be covered.
As?the?teaching involves laboratory and/or field work, you should consider taking out a separate travel and personal risk insurance.?Read about your insurance coverage as a student.
Examination
Four project assignments with associated mandatory research reports.
Final oral exam: presentation of one of the project assignments.
All four project assignments and the final oral exam must be passed in the same semester to pass the course.
This course has?mandatory exercises in the form of a presentation that must be approved before you can sit the final exam.
It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses:FYS4420 – Experimental Techniques in Porous and Complex Systems?
Language of examination
Subjects taught in English will only offer the exam paper in English. You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about?the grading system.
Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a?postponed exam?at the beginning of the next semester.
New examinations?are offered at the beginning of the next semester for students who do not successfully complete the exam during the previous semester.
We do not offer a re-scheduled exam for students who withdraw during the exam.
