Schedule, syllabus and examination date

Course content

The course describes key topics in the field of energy materials focusing on how functional materials enable various sustainable energy technologies. The course is adapted to students with a background in chemistry and physics, especially students at the study programme Fornybar energi og nanoteknologi (bachelor).

Main themes include materials for solar cells and LED; production, storage and use of hydrogen; fuel cells; and batteries. In addition, topics such as thermoelectric and magnetocaloric materials will be covered briefly, as well as catalysts for process efficiency.

Learning outcome

After completing the course, you:

  • have a good overview of how materials enable different applications related to sustainable energy, as well as perspectives on expected developing trends in the coming years.
  • have insight into the most important factors for designing materials required in various energy technologies.
  • understand the general principles for the function of the energy materials, individually and as components in a system.
  • know the most important methods for characterizing the properties of the materials, especially from a practical perspective.
  • have knowledge of the production of energy materials.
  • have a good understanding of how solar cells, LEDs, batteries, hydrogen systems, and fuel cells work

Admission to the course

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for?in Studentweb.

Special admission requirements

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2

And in addition one of these:
