FYS4120 – Classical mechanics and electrodynamics
Course description
Course content
Analytical mechanics, Lagrange's and Hamilton's equations, special theory of relativity and electromagnetism.
Learning outcome
To give the students knowledge of important classic theories, analytical mechanics, Maxwell's electromagnetism and to develop further the theory of relativity introduced in the basic courses.

Formal prerequisite knowledge
No prerequisites.
Recommended previous knowledge
Knowledge corresponding to the following courses at the University of Oslo: MAT1100 – Calculus, MAT1110 – Calculus and Linear Algebra, MAT1120 – Linear Algebra, FYS-MEK1110 – Mechanics (discontinued) and FYS1120 – Electromagnetism.
Overlapping courses
10 credits overlap against FYS3120 – Classical Mechanics and Electrodynamics.
Teaching
The course is given in the spring term and contains approximately 6 hours of teaching (lectures and exercises) per week.
Examination
Written assignment with approx. 30% weight (primo April). A 3-hour written exam with approx. 70% weight (primo June). Letter grade.
