GEO9151 – Earthquake and Volcanic Processes
Course description
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
This course will focus on the physics of earthquake and volcanic processes, which are both important endogenic processes accommodating the deformation of the Earth’s crust. Building on geomechanics concepts, we will introduce key controls on earthquakes including the strength of faults, stress transfer, triggering and anthropogenic seismicity. We will investigate magma transport through dykes, sills and other magma intrusions, fracture mechanics associated with dyke and sill propagation, volcano deformation induced by the emplacement of magma, and the stability of a volcanic edifice before it collapses. Inter-links between volcanic systems and earthquakes will be addressed. The course will integrate laboratory, numerical and theoretical approaches.
Learning outcome
After completing this course, you will have knowledge in
- magma transfer and emplacement in Earth’s crust
- volcano deformation and volcano-tectonics
- earthquake and fault mechanics
- stress transfer and triggering
- links between an earthquake and volcanic systems
- publication level scientific writing
- independent research-based project work
Admission to the course
PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through?Studentweb.
If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.
PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must?apply for a position as a visiting student?within a given deadline.
The courses GEO4151 and GEO9151?have a joint admission?with a joint capacity of 10 students.?If the number of applicants exceeds the course capacity, applicants will be ranked in the following order:
- Students admitted to the following programme option:?
- PhD candidates at the Geosciences Department
- Students in other programme options in the Geosciences master’s programme
- Other PhD candidates and visiting PhD candidates
- Master’s level exchange students and other master’s level students at the MN Faculty
- Single-course students on master’s level
Admission will be decided by drawing lots for applicants who are ranked equally.
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Recommended previous knowledge
- GEO4131 – Geomechanics
- basic maths and programming
Overlapping courses
- 10 credits overlap with GEO4151 – Earthquake and Volcanic Processes.
Teaching
The course includes lectures, seminars and mandatory hours in experimental and numerical laboratories. In addition there will be oral presentations by students.
General information about excursions at the Department of Geosciences
As?the?teaching involves laboratory and/or fieldwork, you should consider taking out a separate travel and personal risk insurance.?Read about your insurance cover as a student.
Attendance at the first lecture is compulsory. Students who fail to meet?are considered to have withdrawn from the course unless they have previously given notice to the Student?administration (studieinfo@geo.uio.no).
We reserve the right to change the teaching?form and examination of the course in semesters where 5 or fewer students have been admitted.
To attend the field trip / excursion it is required that the following course is passed:
To attend the mandatory lab work it is required that the following course is passed:
Examination
- All mandatory activities must be approved before you can sit the final exam.
- A written scientific report counts 50% towards the final grade
- An oral presentation counts 50% towards the final grade.
- Both the written report and the presentation must be passed separately in order to pass the course.
Mandatory assignments are valid for 5 semesters starting from the semester they were approved the first time.
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you?withdraw from the exam?after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
It will also be counted as 1 of the 3 attempts to sit the exam for this course if you sit the exam for the following course:
Examination support material
No examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about?the grading system.
Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are?offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.
Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass, the original examination.
