Course content
The course is about the central metabolic reaction pathways as well as (hormonal) regulation of these reaction pathways. The metabolic reaction pathways and the regulation of these will be seen in physiological connection. After finishing this course students will have knowledge of how different nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins and fat is taken up, stored converted into new components or combusted to yield ATP and/or heat.?
Learning outcome
After completing this course, you?have insight into:
- the central anabolic and catabolic reaction pathways; glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, glycogen synthesis and degradation, citric acid cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, lipid catabolism and biosynthesis, amino acid oxidation and degradation, urea cycle, and biosynthesis of amino acids and nucleotides.
- the interconnections of metabolic pathways and how they are regulated in cooperation with the organism’s needs.
- the tasks of organs, tissues and body fluids in metabolism.
- how certain diseases are due to ineffective metabolic pathways.
- hormonal regulation of the energy metabolism and food intake.
- use computational tools for investigation of metabolic pathways (KEGG, Pymol and modeling).
Admission to the course

Priority will be given to students in the bachelor program in Biosciences.
Special admission requirements
In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:
Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2
And in addition one of these:
Physics (1+2)
Chemistry (1+2)
Biology (1+2)
Information technology (1+2)
Geosciences (1+2)
Technology and theories of research (1+2)
The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies(in Norwegian).
Formal prerequisite knowledge
HMS0503 – Laboratory Safety and HMS0505 – Electricity Safety must be completed before the laboratory teaching starts.?

- BIOS2900 – Molecular Biology (continued) or BIOS2910 – Molecular Biology
- BIOS1100 – Introduction to computational models for Biosciences

Teaching
Canvas is used as an active learning platform in this course. The students are expected to prepare prior to all lecturing, colloquia and lab activities. The suggested material to go through before any of the teaching activities will be posted on canvas.

Mandatory course work must be approved before the student can attend the exam.
Approved mandatory assignments and activities are valid for 3 years.
Attendance at the first lecture is mandatory, also for those on the waiting list. You will lose your seat on the course if notice is not given to the student administration?studieinfo@ibv.uio.no?prior to the first lecture.

Access to teaching: A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. Examination
Final written exam which counts 100% towards the final?grade.?
This course has mandatory course work that must be approved before you can sit the final?exam.
Exam attempts: It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course if you sit the exam for?the following course: MBV2050 – Biokjemi II - Bioenergetikk og metabolisme (continued).?

The examination text is given in English and Norwegian. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
