BIOS4216 – Evolution and Systematics of Organismal Groups: The Plant Kingdom
Course description
Course content
This course covers evolution and mechanisms of evolution in plants, mainly within the Angiosperms. It does also cover systematics and classification of globally important groups of plants, or groups of plants with ongoing research at University of Oslo. Examples from current research and the methods used are included when relevant. Knowledge on morphological diversity within systematic or ecological important groups will also be obtained in the field through a fieldcourse.
Learning outcome
After completing the course, you will:
- Have knowledge on the most important mechanisms for evolution and speciation within the Angiosperms
- Have an overview of the Angiosperm phylogeny, the most important evolutionary changes and can characterize the main groups
- Have an overview of the globally most important plant families, how they are characterized and where they belong in the phylogenetic tree.
- Be familiar with modern research methodology and important research questions within the field.
- Have field experience with the diversity of systematic and ecological groups of plants from a tropical country.
Admission to the course
Students admitted at UiO must?apply for courses?in Studentweb. Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.
Nordic citizens and applicants residing in the Nordic countries may?apply to take this course as a single course student.
If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about?admission requirements and procedures for international applicants.
Applicants are ranked by the following criteria:
1. Master students at the MN faculty who have the course as part of the approved curriculum.?Master's students at the Department of Biosciences are given priority.
2. Students with admission to single courses on master’s level and exchange students
Applicants are ranked by credits in each group; all applicants within 1st rank before applicants in 2nd etc. If admission is limited to a fixed number of participants, admission will be decided by drawing lots for students who are ranked equally
