Course content
The course provides advanced teaching in selected topics in physiology, neurobiology and cell biology and will provide insight into the research activities that take place in the Oslo area. The written study material will mainly be original research publications and overview articles. Content may vary from year to year
Learning outcome
You will meet scientists and research groups in the Oslo area and learn about their research through lectures and demonstrations such as
- Comparative physiology, circulatory physiology, pain research and muscle physiology.
Cognitive neurobiology, cellular neurobiology, learning and memory.
You will deepen your knowledge in selected areas through reading, summarizing and presenting published research papers handed out during the course.
Admission to the course
PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.
If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.
PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline. The courses BIOS5812 and BIOS9812 have common admission. Applicants are ranked by the following criteria:
1. PhD candidates and master students at the MN faculty who have the course as part of the approved curriculum.
2. Other PhD candidates and visiting PhD candidates.
3. Students with admission to single courses on master’s level and exchange students
4. Applicants are ranked by credits in each group; all applicants within 1st rank before applicants in 2nd etc. If admission is limited to a fixed number of participants, admission will be decided by drawing lots for students who are ranked equivalently.

Teaching
- 2-3 days lectures and demonstrations each week.
- Self-study of distributed research articles especially towards the end of the teaching period. As part of the teaching, all PhD candidates?will hold an individual presentation of a scientific article for the other participants on the course.
Participation in the teaching is compulsory. There is a requirement of 80% attendance .
The course is taught if more than 10 students register.
Examination
Final written exam which counts 100 % towards the final?grade.
You must give a presentation over a given subject to be approved to qualify for the exam.
This course has mandatory exercises?that must be approved before you can sit the final?exam
It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses:?BIOS5812 – Advanced Physiology and Nevrobiology, MBV4320 – Advanced Physiology and Cell Biology (discontinued), MBV9320 – Advanced Physiology and Cell Biology (discontinued).
