Course content
BIO5000 gives an introduction in literature search and relevant scientific resources central for new Masterstudents. Scientific ethics and science history gives you a great advantage before you are to begin your grade. You are also presented with potential problems that can come up, in addition to tips and advice from earlier Master students. You get to know the different scientific environments situated in the department.
Learning outcome
When you have completed this course:
- you are familiar with the terms scientific communication and dissemination, presentation of scientific results and ethics.
- you know how to search in relevant literature databases.
- you know methods for systematic and effectiv reference management with for example the reference program EndNote.
Admission
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Participants must be accepted to the master programme prior to taking BIO5000. You have to attend to the course MNLAB0020 prior or meanwhile you attend to this course.
Teaching
The course will be held over five days in the beginning of each semester. Participation, an exam and a hand in and presentation of the MSc project description in the following semester are compulsory.
Examination
To pass the course you have to participate in lectures, pass a 1-hour multiple choice exam and hand in and present the project description for your master thesis in the following semester.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
