BIO9110 – Ecological GIS modelling

Course content
The course gives an introduction to use of GIS (Geographical Information Systems) in ecological modelling. The course will contain some theoretical aspects of GIS and practical analyses. GIS models for marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems will be covered. The course will also cover GIS modelling on both regional and local scales. Main subjects will be terrain analyses, spatial statistics, interpolation methods, prediction modelling, least cost path analyses and visualisation (incl. 3D).
Learning outcome
To provide knowledge and experience on how GIS is used in ecological modelling. The course will give an introduction to the most promising GIS methods in ecological research. A main focus will also be on how to operate GIS on the computer.
Admission
PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.
If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.
PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.
Prerequisites
Recommended previous knowledge
BIO1000 – Elementary Biology (discontinued), BIO2100 – General Ecology (continued), BIO2150A – Biostatistics (discontinued), and BIO4021 – Methods of Gradient Analysis (continued).
Teaching
The course consists of lectures (15 h), computing laboratory work (15 h) and a project work (30 h). All laboratory work is mandatory, but a maximum of 20% absence is accepted.
This subject uses Fronter.
Examination
To pass the course you have to:
- get approved mandatory participation on the computer laboratory
- pass the laboratory journals
- pass the project work

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
