BIO9170 – Recent literature in microbial evolutionary genomics

Schedule, syllabus and examination date

Course content

The course will focus on evolutionary biology of microbes – both microeukaryotes like fungi and protists, as well as bacteria. A special emphasis will be on genome evolution of microbes studied through genomics and transcriptomics analyses. Further, bioinformatics analyses of the data will be highlighted. The teaching is based on biweekly literature colloquia where the students present and discuss recent articles within the field. Also essays (in the form of written summaries of articles) will be obligatory.

Learning outcome

Students gain knowledge about state-of-the-art research within evolutionary biology of microbes , with a special focus on genome evolution of microbes.

Admission

PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.

If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.
