Course content

MBV3010 gives an introduction to how eukaryot cells and their organelles are built and function dynamically in living cells, tissues and organisms. The course covers certain evolutionary aspects of the development of cells and organisms. Cell biological aspects of signal transduction and immunological mechanisms er central elements of the course.

Learning outcome

The course should make the student able to:

  • explain how cellular membranes are composed and how membranes undergo fusion and budding and are transported in eukaryotic cells, including how molecules pass through membranes and the physiological importance of these mechanisms.
  • describe how proteins are synthesized, modified and transported to their respective target membranes and organelles in a cell, based on information in the structure of the protein.
  • understand how cell biology mechanisms play important roles in cellular signaling pathways and in several aspects of our immune system.
  • read original and review articles on cell biology topics and in collaboration with other students present the essence of these adequately to fellow students.
  • conduct basic immunological techniques in the laboratory and evaluate the results in the laboratory journal format.

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2

And in addition one of these:

  • Physics (1+2)
  • Chemistry (1+2)
  • Biology (1+2)
  • Information technology (1+2)
  • Geosciences (1+2)
  • Technology and theories of research (1+2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).

Following courses must also be taken in the same semester or earlier than MBV3010:

For students attending MBV3010 spring 2014 or later, applies that MBV3010 can't be included in a degree before HMS0503 is passed.

Recommended previous knowledge

MBV1010 – Cell biology and genetics (discontinued), MBV1050- Biochemistry I: Structure and function of biomolecules and MBV1020-Physiology or similar courses.

Overlapping courses

10 credits overlap with BIOS3700 – Cell Biology 2

Teaching

The course format will be lectures (54 hours), colloquia (24 hours), group work (ca 10 hours) and labwork (5 hours). Students are expected to take an active part in classes, and to hand in lab reports and some colloquia questions. The lab. work, group work and colloquia are mandatory. The lab reprorts, group work and some colloquia papers must be approved before the exam.

As the teaching involves laboratory and/or field work, you should consider taking out a separate travel and personal risk insurance. Read about your insurance cover as a student.

Examination

Final written exam, 3 hours, in June. Allowed examination aids: None. The group work included the presentation and the approved colloquia questions, can be used to ajust the final grade.

Letter grading (A-F).

This subject offer new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination. More information about new examination can be found on the university's site.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses:BIOS3700 – Cell Biology 2

Evaluation

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
