MBV3020 – Molecular genetics and developmental biology

Course content

MBV3020 provides a thorough introduction to the basic principles of eukaryotic molecular genetics and developmental biology. The course builds on MBV2010 – Molecular biology (continued).

Learning outcome

After completing this course you should have the following skills:

  • Understand the main principles of gene expression
  • Master the main methods to study nucleic acids and proteins in gene regulation
  • Know the basic principles of cell division, apoptosis, cell differentiation
  • Master the basic knowledge about the genetic principles involved in the design and maintenance of an organism
  • Know how errors in these genetic principles can give rise to the disease state.
  •  Perform and plan simple laboratory and evaluate the results in terms of a laboratory records

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2

And in addition one of these:

  • Physics (1+2)
  • Chemistry (1+2)
  • Biology (1+2)
  • Information technology (1+2)
  • Geosciences (1+2)
  • Technology and theories of research (1+2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).

Following courses must also be taken in the same semester or earlier than MBV3020:

For students attending MBV3020 autumn 2014 or later, applies that MBV3020 can't be included in a degree before HMS0503 is passed.

Recommended previous knowledge

MBV1010 – Cell biology and genetics (discontinued) og MBV2010 – Molecular biology (continued) or similar courses.

Teaching

The course includes lectures (35 h), seminars (4 h), colloquia (12 t), and laboratory work (15 h). Laboratory work, colloquia and seminars are compulsory. The laboratory reports must be approved in order for the student to be eligible for the final exam.

As the teaching involves laboratory and/or field work, you should consider taking out a separate travel and personal risk insurance. Read about your insurance cover as a student.

Examination

Laboratory reports, (counts 1/4), and final written exam, 3 hours, in December, (counts 3/4). Allowed examination aids: None. Letter grades (A-F).

This subject offer new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination. More information about new examination can be found on the university's site.
