Course description
Course content
The aim of this course is to provide a serious overview about selected immunological and cancer related topics that all have a substantial impact in disease development.
Learning outcome
All lectures are given by national and international experts in the field whereby most recent contents are guaranteed. Thus it is anticipated that students affiliated in the basic science area do receive insights from the clinical aspects of science and vice versa more medical orientated students do have the opportunity for new insights of basic science strategies and conclusions. Taken together this course should strengthen the overall intention of translational research in Oslo.
Admission
PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.
If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.
PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.
Ph.D.-students from other universities or university colleges that would like to take the course as a part of their theoretical syllabus for the Ph.D.-degree must apply for the status as a visiting Ph.D-student

Formal prerequisite knowledge
Master of Science, M.D. or admission to the Faculty of Medicines Medical Student Research Program (Forskerlinjen).

Teaching
The course is given as a two-weeks intensive course.
The course consists of a series of lectures and student seminars. In addition the students are required to write a daily journal: Here the students are to write brief summaries and comments upon the lectures held during the course. The lectures, the student’s seminars and the journal are mandatory.
Most of the topics are presented in a way that the first lecture introduces the field from the basic science point of view followed by a lecture which focuses on more clinical relevant aspects of the same topic. We also included some lectures which cover modern techniques and approaches in Biomedicine.
Examination
You have to participate at the lectures, give a presentation during the student seminar and write a journal during the whole course. The journal shall consist of daily summaries and comments upon the lectures. Participation at the lectures, the student presentation and the journal are together basis for the evaluation of the students.

Explanations and appeals
Withdrawal from an examination
You may sit for this exam up to 3 times. Participation at the lectures, giving a presentation at one of the student seminars and writing a journal, are all mandatory and part of the exam. If you wish to withdraw from the exam you must inform the administration at least two weeks prior to the last day of the course. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.
Special examination arrangements
Students may apply for access to alternative exam resources or exam forms on the basis of chronic illness and/or special needs that create a marked disadvantage to other students in the exam situation. More info about this you find here
Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
Other
The Molecular Medicine in Cancer and Immunology Course is a national research training course for post-graduate students, given by the Ph.D.-School of Molecular Medicine. The course is held at the Biotechnology Centre of Oslo (UiO).
The course was untill 2009 credited 8 ECTS credits. From 2010 it is 10 ECTS credits.
