In preparation for next week's teaching session, please prepare and discuss among yourselves the topic of surveillance of communicable diseases and international health regulations.

Here is what we expect you to know:

• What is a communicable disease?
• What is a surveillance system?
• Why is surveillance necessary?
• What regulates the surveillance of diseases?

Please be ready to discuss:

• What does surveillance entail? What are the requirements?
• What are the (sociotechnical) challenges of national versus international surveillance?

Please remember that in the absence of seminars, we highly encourage you to organize group discussions among yourselves in preparation for the plenary session.
