IN-GEO1900 – Introduction to Programming for Geosciences

Schedule, syllabus and examination date

Course content

This course provides an introduction to programming with the Python programming language. The programming tasks are largely about mathematical calculations linked to topics from the natural sciences and geotechnical issues.

The teaching in the first half of the semester will be shared with IN1900 – Introduction to Programming with Scientific Applications. Geoscience students will have their own teaching and assignments related to geoscience-related problems in the second half.

Learning outcome

The aim of the course is for you to be able to

  • use basic Python programming such as loops, decisions, functions and various data structures
  • create program sketches and algorithms based on the mathematical specification of a scientific problem
  • debug programs and construct tests to find and correct errors in own programs
  • use external Python modules in interaction with own code to derive, integrate, find zero points and solve difference and differential equations
  • create, apply and evaluate mathematical models that describe geoscience issues, and write programs that make calculations with the models
  • discuss the suitability of different numerical methods based on geoscience issues

Admission to the course

This course is for stduents belonging to the bachelor programmes Geologi og geografi (bachelor) and Geofysikk og klima (bachelor)

Special admission requirements

In addition to fulfilling the?Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

Mathematics R1 or Mathematics (S1+S2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies. Read more about?special admission requirements?(in Norwegian).
