IN2090 – Databases and Data Modellering

Course content
This course provides a thorough introduction to one method for semantic data modeling and how such a model can be realized as a physical database. The course provides in-depth training in the use of SQL to formulate queries against relational databases. A simple introduction to the theory of relational databases will be given.
Learning outcome
After taking IN2090 you'll:
- be able to create and quality assure an appropriate data model for a given application
- be able to?realize this model as a relational database
- have thorough training in the use of SQL as a query language against relational databases
- know a little about how to find out if a relational database has update anomalies
- know how to use common programming languages to query relational databases

In addition to fulfilling the?Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:
- Mathematics R1 or Mathematics (S1+S2)

Teaching
4 hours of lectures/plenary and 2 hours of group lectures each week.

Examination
4 hours written digital exam. All mandatory assignments must be approved prior to the exam.
It will also be counted as one of?your three?attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses:?INF1300, IN112, IN113, IN114, IN114A
Examination support material
All written and printed.
Language of examination
You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about?the grading system.
Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are?offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.
Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
