Course content

This course provides a broad introduction to information security and cyber security, as a basis for understanding, assessing and applying various measures at a technical and organizational level that can provide adequate protection of information resources against harm. Cyber security is also about protecting physical systems from harm as a result of attacks through the Internet. The course forms the basis for taking other security courses at bachelor's and master's level.

Learning outcome

After taking this course you'll:

  • have a solid understanding of concepts in information security
  • have general knowledge of frameworks and practices for managing information security
  • have some knowledge of tools and methods for monitoring and incident response for information security
  • be able to design adequate security solutions for simple applications
  • be able to apply simple tools and methods that support network and system security

Special admission requirements

In addition to fulfilling the?Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 or Mathematics (S1+S2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies. Read more about?special admission requirements?(in Norwegian).

It is an advantage to have taken an introductory course in computer technology (e.g. IN1020).

Overlapping courses

Teaching

2 hours of elctures and 2 hours of group exercises each week.

It's highly recommended to attend the first lecture as important information will be given.

Examination

The exam consists of:

The course have mandatory assignments that must be passed prior to the final exam.

It will also be counted as one of?your three?attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses:?INF3510 – Information security (continued)

Examination support material

No examination support material is allowed.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in Norwegian. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F?is a fail. Read more about?the grading system.

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are?offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
