Grading: Thresholds and distributions
Dear IN3050/4050 students,
We have now completed grading, and you should soon receive your final grade. The limits for attaining each grade were as follows:
A: 90 B: 81 C: 64 D: 56 E: 47
These limits were attained by compensating for the fact that random guessing on the multiple choice questions gives you quite a few points - and those guessing points are higher for lower scores (if you know the answer to most multiple choice questions, guessing on the few you don't know doesn't give you many points, but if you don't know the answer to any multiple choice questions, random guessing would give you around 16 points). After the guessing-compensation, however, we reduced the grade limit by 2 points for each grade because we did not want to penalize anyone for wrong answers on question on Task 31 - since we had promised that you wouldn't need to remember the formula for cross-entropy loss.
These grade limits lead to the following grade distribution, which is relatively similar to earlier years' editions of the course:

Thank you for the semester, and hope you have a great summer!
