Course content
Digital signal processing is a basis for the development of new methods in areas such as telecommunications (mobile telephony), multimedia (MP3), medicine (ultrasound), sonar, seismic, remote sensing and instrumentation. Signal processing can be defined as the mathematical tool used to analyze, model and perform operations on physical signals and their sources. The course is an introduction to basic methods such as sampling, filtering and frequency analysis.
Learning outcome
The aim of the course is to:
- Learn to master the basic methods for processing of both analog and discrete/digital signals and systems.
- Create a good theoretical understanding of the representation of signals in the time and frequency domain.
- Understand how the theoretical concepts are used in important systems such as mobile phones, audio compression and imaging systems.
- Get a good background for further studies in signal processing.

Recommended previous knowledge
The course is based on: IN1000 – Introduction to Object-oriented Programming/IN1900 – Introduction to Programming with Scientific Applications, MAT1110 – Calculus and Linear Algebra, MAT1120 – Linear Algebra (should be taken before or in parallel with this course).

Teaching
Four hours of lectures, two hours workshop and two hours exercise lectures per. week. Exercise lecture is part of the mandatory exercise plan and attendance is compulsory.
Students who can prove that they can not participate in the weekly exercises can, on application, follow a separate schedule. Mandatory assignments must be approved before taking the exam.
Examination
Oral exam or 4 hours final written exam depending om the number of students. The exercise plan and mandatory assignments must be approved to be allowed to take the exam.
It will also be counted as one of?your three?attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: IN3190 – Digital Signal Processing, INF3470 – Digital signalbehandling (continued), INF4470 – Digital signalbehandling (continued), INF3440 – Signal processing (continued), INF4440 – Signal processing (continued)
Examination support material
No examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester. Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
