IN5190 – Design for Sustainability

Course content
This course gives a broad introduction in, and overview of, the field of Design for sustainability. It addresses the main developments in the field, from Green Design to holistic approaches, such as Systemic Design and Design for Sustainable Transitions.
If you are interested in a sustainability and design-oriented master thesis, this course will enable to identify methodologies, methods, and tools for your master project. If you are not involved in the design or development of technologies, services, or processes, this course will provide a good introduction to a growing field of research and practice. It will provide a better understanding of the innovative aspects of design for sustainability context as well as enable you to contribute to making strategic decisions in your future workplace. This is a theoretical course and doesn’t require design skills or design experiences
Learning outcome
After this course you will be able to:
- describe how social and ecological sustainability can be addressed by design
- present and discuss the main Design for Sustainability methodologies, methods, and tools
- compare the different Design for Sustainability approaches and select the appropriate approaches for specific cases
- engage in strategic discussions regarding Design for Sustainability competencies and design approaches in research and design projects

Teaching
2 hours of seminar/lectures per week.

Group presentation of one of the methods/tools mentioned in the course book

Group assignment related to a design approach
Attending the first lecture is compulsory.
Examination
The exam consists of an oral group exam. All mandatory assignments must be approved before you can take the exam.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about?the grading system.
