IN5560 – Data governance
Course content
This course offers an interdisciplinary, socio-technical approach to studying data governance on a societal, organizational and individual level. During the course, students will understand the interplay between organisations, technologies and laws related to the production, sharing and reuse of data within and across organisations. This course provides students with an academic understanding of distinct data governance approaches and the ability to apply this knowledge across various real-world contexts.
Learning outcome
After completing the course, students will gain the following competencies:
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of data governance from a socio-technical perspective
- Discuss data governance from an organizational, technical and legal perspective across domains
- Understand the value of data as strategic resources for organizations and societies
- Distinguish concepts such as data strategy, data management and data governance
- Distinguish data governance approaches in case of personal and non-personal data
- Conduct and analyze a data governance strategy
- Understand data governance in the context of artificial intelligence
- Be familiar with core laws and regulations regarding the production, sharing and usage of data, e.g., the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation and the Artificial Intelligence Act
- Critically reflect on key ethical concerns in the governance of personal data
Admission to the course

Teaching
A total of 4 hours of lectures, case discussions, and/or?assignment training per week.
It's mandatory to attend at least 80% of the teachings.

Examination
The course grade is based on the following assessments:
- Individual oral exam (60%)
- Group-based project report, to be written in groups of two or three, on a self-chosen topic decided in collaboration with the course leader (40%)
All parts of the exam and the attendance are compulsory?and must be passed?in the same semester, to pass the course.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about?the grading system.
Resit an examination
In this course, postponed exams are not offered for exam candidates who are ill before the exam or who become ill during the exam. A deferred submission deadline may be offered. Deadlines may be extended up to 7 days; the duration of the extension depends on the duration of the exam.?The illness must be documented with a doctor's certificate dated no later than the ordinary submission date. You must submit the doctor's certificate to the Student Administration at IFI before the submission deadline for the home exam.
