Info update IN5570/9570 2020-03-18:
Changes to the course due to the Corona virus situation:
All physical meetings and presence on Campus has been forbidden. So stay at home.
Lectures and Group Sessions cancelled this week and replaced by Question & Answer
sessions (Q&A). They will be recorded and published on the Web.
Teaching will recommence next week starting March 23rd, 2020 using virtual meetings and
lectures using Zoom—you should download Zoom from zoom.us/download on whatever
devices that you want to use (I use Mac and Android Smartphone and iPad).
The lectures will be recorded – and uploaded to the course web.
We expect to complete the course according to the original time table.
You are expected to study at home, continue working on the Home Exam – so far, there is
NO plan to extend the deadline – there has been false rumors circulating concerning
deadline extensions by MN – but that is fake news.

There was very few at the Q&A session - and no questions, and I accidentally did not record it. Almost all of it is in the info contained in the next message, see above. And here.

We plan to replace tomorrows Group Session with a Q&A session.

Hope you are all healthy and able to continue your studies at home.

All lectures at UiO have been cancelled for this week.

That means that you can spend time doing the home exam.

I will start a Zoom meeting at 14:15 today, March 18th, 2020 where IN5570/9570 students can ask questions. I will continue for as...

The University buildings have been closed to all, both students and teachers.

You are expected to continue your studies at home.

The University is preparing to do virtual lectures and virtual group sessions -- Oleks and I are ready to do this already in the coming week using a Zoom client - get it using Oleks' instructions in the previous message, i.e., get it from Zoom download center then login via uio.zoom.us using your UiO login (Feide). Oleks did it already yesterday - and it worked well. But the University wants to use the coming week to prepare for virtual teaching and so we have - so far - been told to wait with virtual teaching until March 23rd.

As you are working on a Home Exam, and you have had the theory necessary to do the work, you can just continue working on the Home Exam - with or without lectures.

We have been allowed to say:
"If you...

This might be a good time to try and connect to a Zoom session. It is most likely how the next lecture will take place.

Hence, I repeat the Zoom instructions succinctly here:

  1. Download a Zoom client for your platform.
  2. Log in using SSO with your UiO account.
  3. Join my meeting 696-836-8830, with an all-digits password of the format ddddddtttt, where dddddd is today's date in f?dselsnummer format, and tttt is the time today's TA session was supposed to start, without separators.

Dear students,

Hereby some clarification on how the online TA session will take place. Your go-to place for questions is Piazza. Piazza is not formally endorsed by UiO, so in case you want to abide by that, you can reach my via e-mail, or Signal at +45 51 44 50 53.

In the case we need a one-on-one, or to discuss something in a group, we will use Zoom. Zoom is a cross-platform video-conferencing application, supported by UiO. You can follow the UiO instructions for logging in.

Once logged in, you can join a meeting set up by me or someone else. Group meeting times will be posted here.

For today's session, I have set up meeting at Meeting ID 696-836-8830, with the password being today's date in f?dselsnummer format, followed by the time our TA session was sup...

Dear students,

I have recently been to Denmark, and they have now taken drastic measures to limit the spread of the Corona-virus. There, I had been in contact with people that have recently been in Tyrol, Austria, which has since been marked as one of the danger zones for travel. No one in my circle is showing signs of illness, but as a precaution, I suggest that today's TA session takes place online.

I will shortly post information about what tools we will use.

Piazza is definitely a place to start. If you have any impeding questions, post them there.

Update concerning COVID-19: TA session tomorrow will still take place as usual.

The lecture next week, March 18th, 2020, for now - it will take place, but it may well be replaced by a virtual lecture.

UiO info released today (in Norwegian).

Dear students,

The purpose of today's exercise session is to get you to run an Emerald program on PlanetLab. The material for the exercise session is being made available here. It will be updated with a list of nodes prepared for 2020 shortly before the exercise session.

Dear students,

You will find updated versions of hiho.txt and kilroy.txt under Assignments/Obligs. These are up-to-date with the syntax of the Emerald version you are currently using.

We talked through Oblig1 at the exercise session. I have uploaded the assignment text with my highlights and comments under Exercise Sessions/03 Getting Started with Oblig1. If you didn't attend, I strongly recommend that you read through my Notes on Exercise Set 2 (which talk about how to actually move objects in Emerald), and revise my slides from...

UiO does not allow us to use Piazza for official communication in any course mainly due to how it treats your personal information. However, many students are, despite this, happy to use Piazza.

We have therefore decided to open a "class" on Piazza for IN5570/IN9570 but we do not require anyone to use it. We will try to monitor the questions and will give answers as appropriate. If our answers contain information relevant to more than one student, we will publish the answer on the official course webpage at uio.no.

Signup page is here (IN9570 participants, just use the IN5570 class): piazza.com/uio.no/spring2020/in5570

For more info concerning why Piazza is not approved, see: https://w...

FYI: Notes on Exercise Set 1 and Exercise Set 2 were made available earlier today.

I recommend working through these exercise sets before Oblig1 is published next week :-)

Dear students,

I am feeling a little under the weather today (have a cold), so unfortunately, there will be no exercise session today either.

I will post my notes on the exercise set from last time, and some follow-up exercises.

Dear students,

To get some hands on experience with types, classes, inheritance, and conformity in Emerald, you can take a look at our Exercise Set 1.

Unfortunately, I cannot attend the exercise session today, but we will walk through this exercise set at the beginning of the next session, next Thursday.

Working though exercise sets is not mandatory, but recommended.

Dear students,

Firstly, I have updated the slides following our exercise session. I've included extra notes for Windows users. See them here. For an exact account of what changed in the slides, see this.

Secondly, I have updated the Docker image. It now shows the hostname AND the IP address in the prompt. This should make working with multiple local Docker+Emerald nodes much easier.

  • So instead of writing something like docker@1331eb6fa70a
  • It now writes something like 1331eb6fa70a@172.17.0.3

The hostname of a Docker container will become relevant later, but the username is always docker anyway, so I stripped that away.
