Course description
Course content
This course focuses on writing and critical reflection in academic research. Through the development of a research survey the student is familiarized with the process of searching publication libraries through the use of specialized search engines and the systematic sorting and classification of relevant publications in a field relevant to their study.
Learning outcome
The student should have the following outcomes upon completing the course:
Knowledge
Upon successful completion of the course, the candidate:
- have advanced knowledge of how research surveys are constructed
- have a clear understanding of the legal and ethical issues related to plagiarism and falsification
Skills
Upon successful completion of the course, the student:
- can plan and conduct a research survey on a scientific topic relevant to their field of study
- can construct a summary of scientific research and present it to an audience
- can write summaries of research using their own words
- can use electronic libraries and research search engines to find publications
- can use reference tools in conjunction with their own survey
General competence
Upon successful completion of the course, the student:
- can identify what defines plagiarism and falsification in research
- can identify major trends in a field of research and communicate it to a non-expert audience

This course is only available for master students in the master program Network and System Administration
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
No prerequisite knowledge beyond general Norwegian Higher Education Entrance Qualification
Teaching
Weekly lectures in order to cover the theoretical aspects of the course. Discussions as well as presentations will be part of the class. The student is expected to complete a survey on a research topic relative to their field. They will develop a strategy for the survey and develop a classification scheme in order to sort the material they go through. The student is required to hold three oral presentations; two group presentations and one individual presentation. Rules for mandatory assignments
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

All examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Explanations and appeals
Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.
Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
