INF5100NSA – Research Methods and Data Analysis
Course content
This course covers two central areas of scientific research: the construction and justification of a research plan and the subsequent analysis of its results. The student will be familiarised with how practical problems from our field are translated into research questions and how experiments can be defined in order to answer the research questions. In addition, the student will learn how statistical analysis can provide insight into the gathered data as well as help make justifiable claims about certain properties of the data.

Knowledge
Upon successful completion of the course, the candidate:
- has advanced knowledge of the research process
- has advanced knowledge of data collection techniques relative to their field of study
- has advanced understanding of quantitative and qualitative methodologies and their applications
Skills
Upon successful completion of the course, the student:
- can construct a problem statement and evaluate it is soundness
- can utilise quality assurance techniques to create sound research proposals
- can construct and evaluate a methodology to answer the problem statement
- can apply statistical analysis and mathematical modelling techniques on data from their field of study
General competence
Upon successful completion of the course, the student:
- can identify research problems from practical problems
- can recognise and explain the components of a research proposal
Admission
This course is only offered for students in the master program Network and System Administration
Teaching
This course will feature weekly lectures and lab work to provide both theoretical and hands-on content. Students will work in groups and complete assignments given to them. The student will supplement the lectures and lab with their own reading.
Students have to write an individual report of 15 +/- 5 pages Mandatory assignments has to be passes. Rules for mandatory assignments
Examination
Individual oral exam.
Mandatory assignments have to be passed prior to the exam.

Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
