INF9120 – Model Based System Development
Course description
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
Practical and active modelling by use of UML, focusing on component based architecture and development.
The course uses UMLs best practices for modelling systems at different levels; business level, software architecture and software component level, focusing on analysis and architecture patterns.
Platform independent models are used for automatic generation of platform specific models, e.g. J2EE, CORBA, MS .Net and Web Services / XML.
Modelling will be supported by a system development process for component based interoperable systems, based on a specialization of the Unified Process.
Keywords: Model Driven System Development, Model Driven Architecture / Development, metamodeling, model transformations, Domain-Specific Languages, UML profiles, business modeling, Enterprise Modeling, Enterprise Architecture, SOA architectures and platforms, BPMN, BPEL, Web Services, WSDL, XML, Model Driven Interoperability, Ontologies.
Learning outcome
This course gives an overview of object modeling and model based software development and aims to give the student an understanding of advantages and disadvantages of adopting these principles in system engineering.
The student should be able to use objects to model different phenomena in the context of both analysis and design, and an understanding of important methods and prerequisites for efficient utilization of reuse in modeling and software engineering.
Admission to the course
PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through?Studentweb.
If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.
PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must?apply for a position as a visiting student?within a given deadline.

Overlapping courses
- 10 credits overlap with INF5120 – Model Based System Development (discontinued).
Teaching
A two hour lecture per week and and one hour group work. Submission of compulsory exercises is required. Note that these exercises are extended compered with INF5120.
Examination
A four hour written exam. The mandatory assignments must be approved prior the exam.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about?the grading system.
Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are?offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester. Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
