INF9631 – Numerical methods for partial differential equations; project assignment

Schedule, syllabus and examination date

Learning outcome

The students shall either carry out a project (a prolongation of the project in INF5620 – Numerical methods for partial differential equations (continued), for instance) or give a lecture on a prescribed topic. The goal of the project work is to solve a problem containing a mathematical model, numerical algorithms, implementations, verification, evaluation of results, as well as report writing.

The goal of the lecture is to study a new scientific material in a limited amount of time (three weeks) and obtain an understanding that is sufficient for giving a lecture. The topic and the level of the lecture will normally be relevant for the student's ph.d. thesis.

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

No obligatory prerequisites beyond the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway.

Teaching

The course is based on private studies. Individual tutoring will be given to students who choose the written project.

Examination

Oral exam.

Students who choose the project version must give a short (10 min) talk and answer questions about the project. The evaluation is based on the quality of the talk, the defense of the project, and the project report.

Students who choose a talk on a prescribed topic will receive the title of the talk three weeks before the exam. The student must find relevant literature and compose a 45 min talk for the exam. The evaluation is based on the scientific contents of the talk, pedagogical features, use of slides, literature overview, handling of questions from the audience, and timing of the presentation.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.

Other

Note that the first lecture is compulsory.

The subject is regarded equal to INF5630 – Numerical methods for partial differential equations; project assignment (discontinued) when practicing exam regulations.
