INF5070 – Media servers and distribution systems
Course description
Course content
The course looks at multimedia server architectures including mechanisms and protocols for the distribution of media data. This includes: media server architectures, data placement on disk, disk scheduling, multimedia file systems, resource handling in operating systems, protocols for distribution of continuous media such as video and audio, and delivery of data. The pratical work in the course will improve the understanding of operating system improvements and hardware support that are meant in particular for dedicated media servers and distribution systems.
Learning outcome
The students will understand the technical demands and potential solutions for "streaming" media servers and for the distribution of media data in data networks. Additionally, students will get an insight into the means of an modifying operating system kernel to improve performance.
