INF5080 – Multimedia - coding and transmission
Course description
Course content
The course covers the main principles behind video- and audio-coding and -compression (DCT, Wavelets, etc.). These principles are implemented in MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H263, JPEG, JPEG2000, Ogg Vorbis, DivXetc. Coding formats and standards for applications (MPEG-7, MPEG-21, etc.) are discussed as well as streaming protocols (RTP, RTSP, MPEG-TS, Ogg Vorbis, etc.). The course looks also into applications like digital TV, DAB, MHP, DICOM (medical applications).
The course language is Norwegian; however the foil sets are (mostly) in English.
Learning outcome
The students will gain a basic understanding of the principles behind coding, compression and transmission of multimedia video and audio.

Overlapping courses
5 credits INF-MKT
Teaching
Two hour lectures a week. The students are required to explain a subject orally.
Examination
Oral exam. Graded A - F.
Other
Note that the first lecture is compulsory. The subject is regarded equal to INF-MKT when practicing exam regulations.
