INF5240 – Globalization, Marginalization and IT
Course description
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
Various chapters of the book, “Making a World of Difference” by Geoff Walsham, Wiley, 2001, and some selected external readings.
Learning outcome
The objective of the course is to develop a deeper theoretical and practical understanding of the relationship between processes of globalization, marginalization and the use of IT. More specifically, the course focuses on two key issues. One, the notion of “diversity” to try and emphasize the point that globalization is not only about homogenization, but its implications are unequal in different parts of the globe. Two, to identify key themes that are useful in analyzing this notion of diversity or difference, and develop both a theoretical and empirical understanding of these themes. These themes will include issues of identity, power, trust, culture, work practices and teamwork.
