Course content
The Web’s inventor Tim Berners-Lee claims that the Web is entering a new phase, in which the wealth of resources that have become available online will be organized in a more meaningful or ‘semantic’ way. At the same time, the growth the Wikipedia and the ‘blogosphere’ shows that completely new ways of co-creating knowledge are beginning to be common. What will the creation and organization of knowledge be like in the future? The goal of this course is to introduce the students to related research, technical developments and trends.
Learning outcome
We shall learn:
- About recent Internet-related developments that are expected to have large impact on Internet technology as well as on business and society.
- To use some of the recently developed methods and technologies for organizing and co-creating knowledge resources on the Web such as Semantic Web (RDF, OWL), Topic Maps, ontology design, semantic follksonomies, dialog mapping tools (Compendium, Cohere and others), Mediawiki, Meme Media Technology, semantic desktop technologies and others.
- To apply those methods and technologies through project work, specifically in:
- Handling ‘global issues’ or ‘wicked problems’ such as the climate change,
- Flexible e-learning
- Scientific production and communication - About related research.
Admission

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
No obligatory prerequisites beyond the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway.Teaching
There will be one two-hour lecture meeting per week throughout the semester.
In addition, each student will do one individual and one group project during the semester.
This course contains mandatory assignments which must be completed and approved.

Examination
All mandatory assignments must be approved prior to the exam.
Within the limits of the University of Oslo regulation, each student will be able to choose whether to receive a letter grade (A to F) or Pass/Fail.
An oral exam will be given at the end of the semester.
The grade will be based 50% on the oral exam and 50% on project work.

No examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.
