TEK5140 – Antennas and Radiowave Propagation

Schedule, syllabus and examination date

Course content

The course covers antennas and radiowave propagation in the frequency range above about 100 MHz. The antenna part covers basic theory, wire, dipole, apertures/horn, reflector, and microstrip, and phased array antennas. The propagation part includes free space loss, reflection, diffraction, effects of atmospheric gases, precipitation such as rain and snow, and abnormal air mixtures, inversion layers, system dimensioning, and radio channel models. The course emphasizes actual radio systems, such as mobile communication, broadband wireless access, wireless local access networks, point-to-point links, sensor networks, and radar.

Learning outcome

After completing this course, you

  • have knowledge about fundamental antenna theory
  • know the most important characteristics of commonly used antenna types
  • have knowledge about radiowaves for use by wireless systems
  • can do basic system dimensioning calculations and estimate interference
  • know how to take varying terrain, buildings, and climate conditions into account

Admission to the course

Students admitted at UiO must?apply for courses?in Studentweb.

Nordic citizens and applicants residing in the Nordic countries may?apply to take this course as a single course student.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about?admission requirements and procedures for international applicants.

The course builds on knowledge equivalent to the knowledge acquired in FYS1120 – Electromagnetism or similar.

Overlapping courses

Teaching

2 hours of?lectures and 1 hour of?exercise per week throughout the semester.

The course has mandatory assignments that must be approved in order to take the exam.

The course lectures are given at the Department of Technology Systems in Kjeller Research Park. See the schedule for the student bus from Campus Blindern.

Examination

  • A final oral exam counts 100% towards the final grade.
  • In case of many students, the exam may be a 3-hour written exam instead.
  • The course has mandatory assignments that must be approved in order to take the final exam.

It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses:

Examination support material

No examination support material is allowed.

Language of examination

Courses taught in English will only offer the exam paper in English. You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F?is a fail. Read more about the grading system

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.
