TEK5720 – Space Systems Project
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
In this course, you will, along with your fellow students, complete an entire project cycle, from defining mission goals and requirements, to the first draft of a system design, simulation and testing, customization, final design, AIT, verification tests, launch, and data analysis and evaluation.
The project course provides practical experience in systems engineering, design of electrical and mechanical subsystems, sensor technology, data analysis, mission planning, and project management.
The course also includes a 5-day stay at And?ya with a course in AIT in a cleanroom and handling of flight hardware, as well as launching a CanSat built during the semester to achieve the defined mission goals.
Learning outcome
After completing the course, you should have a good understanding of
- the various phases of a space mission - from idea to launch to analysis
- specifying requirements for a given problem
- planning corresponding verification methods (test plan)
- working in a clean room
- ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) protection equipment and its importance during the handling of sensitive equipment
You have knowledge of
- project management
- various standards (e.g., ECSS)
- risk management
- mission planning
You have experience in
- executing a self-chosen project
- planning and documenting project work
- writing technical documentation
- conducting functional and verification tests
- conducting environmental tests (e.g., vacuum, vibration, and shock)
- analyzing test results and/or discussing data
- using ESD equipment
- presenting in front of the class
- problem-solving
- working under time pressure
- teamwork
Admission to the course
Students admitted at UiO must?apply for courses?in Studentweb. Students enrolled in other master's degree programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.
Nordic citizens and applicants residing in the Nordic countries may?apply to take this course as a single course student.
If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about?admission requirements and procedures for international applicants.
This course has a limited capacity, depending on the number of students UiO can send to And?ya Space in the given semester.
Students will be prioritised in the following order:
Students on the master's programme for Space Systems.
Students that have passed the course TEK4700 – Romsystemer
Students on other master's programmes at UiO with the course in their study plan
Other students
Applicants are ranked based on credits in each group. All applicants within group 1 are ranked before applicants falling within group 2, and so on. For students with the same number of credits within each group, admission is determined through a random draw.
Recommended previous knowledge
An understanding of systems engineering in space is strongly recommended before taking this course. The courses TEK4000 – Systems Engineering and TEK4700 – Romsystemer will provide the necessary background.?
The course will also require a basic knowledge of mathematics, physics, and programming. Courses that will provide useful background, but that are not strictly necessary in order to take the course, are MAT1100 – Calculus, MAT110, emne: MAT-INF1100, IN1900 – Introduction to Programming with Scientific Applications, FYS1100 – Mechanics and Modelling, FYS1105 – Classical Mechanics, FYS1120 – Electromagnetism.
Teaching
The course has 3 hours of lectures and group assignments with guidance per week throughout the semester. Additionally, there are 3 hours where students can continue with their project work. It is not excluded that these hours will be used for investigating certain topics or deepen some themes.
The course has mandatory assignments which must be approved before you can take the exam.
The course is taught at the Department of Technology Systems at Kjeller Research Park. See the timetable for the department's own student bus from Blindern.
In addition to teaching at Kjeller, there is a 5-day stay at And?ya Space at the end of the semester.
Examination
The course has two mandatory assignments during the semester that must be approved in order to sit the final exam:
- an individual presentation of design or a progress report for Critical Design Review (CDR)
- a final report written in groups
The final grade is determined on the basis of
- the final group report (counts 25% towards the final grade)
- a final oral exam (counts 75% towards the final grade)
Examination support material
No examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
Courses taught in English will only offer the exam paper in English. You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F?is a fail. Read more about?the grading system.
Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are?offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.
Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass, the original examination.
