Course content
You are learning practical aspects of optimization of NMR experiments while actually using real NMR spectrometers. You are learning the basics of selecting acquisition- and processing-parameters. You learn how to acquire data manually and in automatic mode. Furthermore, you are taught how to process two-dimensional NMR?spectra. The course gives an introduction to parameter differences in one- and two-dimensional NMR experiments, a first theroretical look into T1 and T2 relaxation (very superficially), and also an introduction to how computers,?programs, and storage places for NMR data are connected and used at UiO NMR Center.
Learning outcome
After completion of the course, you:
- are able to prepare and execute NMR experiments with the nuclei 1H, 13C, 19F, and 31P, and similarly for the experiments APT and DEPT
- can use the automation program IconNMR as a helping tool for running a series of 2-dimensional NMR-experiments (COSY, TOCSY, NOESY, ROESY, HSQC, HMBC, S-HSQC, S-HMBC and 1H-19F and 19F-19F experiments togther with dual receiver experiments) and are also able to perform simple solvent suppression experiments
- can process and understand the information content in two-dimensional NMR experiments
- are trained in setting up and running basic NMR experiments
- can apply the results coming out of NMR experiments in order to elucidate the exact atom by atom identity of new and unknown molecules

Due to the registration of user IDs?on instrument PCs, intensive teaching, and mandatory?use of instruments, it is not possible to register for this course less than one week before the teaching?starts.

Overlapping courses
- 5 credits overlap with KJM9280 – NMR Spectroscopy.
Teaching
The course?extends over?the whole semester. The teaching consists of the following:
- Around 25 hours of practical training in NMR spectroscopy at NMR-spectrometers is be completed during a 10 day period. ?
- 5 hours of lectures/theory on day 1 in the course. Mid way in the semester a two hour seminar is held where the topic is various ways of writing the report/project assay.?
- An 1-hour practical test on an NMR spectrometer, approximately two weeks into the course, must?be passed before you can hand in the report and present your final lecture.?
- Two weeks after the last student has passed the 1-hour practical test on the NMR spectrometers, a two-hour voluntary colloquium is offered every week for four weeks where report writing and spectrum interpretation are covered.

Examination
The course does not have a classical exam. Three following evaluations has to be passed for getting the course approved:
- One hour practical test at a NMR spectrometer.
- Delivering of written report/project description
- An oral power point presentation where the thinking and arguing in the written report/project description is presented.
The practical test?needs to be passed before you can hand in the written report and the oral presentation.
It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to get this course approved if you go through the same approval procedure for one of the following courses: KJM9280 – NMR Spectroscopy
Examination support material
All examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about?the grading system.
Resit an examination
If you fail to pass the three assessments and thus fail the course, the entire course must be taken again next Autumn. If you are sick during an assessment, you can take the assessment a few days later.
