You will be divided in groups of
2-3 people and each group will research a topic (different topic for each
group). Use publically available documents e.g. on the internet and in the
library. We have provided links to a number of useful sites on the KJM 5900
main page, but also try to find your own! Each group shall produce an essay
of about 2-3 pages which will be posted on the KJM 5900 web-page. We will
have a mid-term gathering where each group presents their topic. The gathering
will be in week 38 (13-18 September).
Topic 1: Glenn Seaborg and
the Actinides
Seaborg, father of the Actinides
and Nobel Laurate, is one of the biggest chemist ever to have lived. Tell
the story with emphasis on the impact his work had on our knowledge of radioactivity!
Topic 2: Nuclear Power in the
Future
Alternative ways of exploring nuclear
power: Can accelerator driven sources of neutrons replace todays nuclear
reactors? What will be the benefit and what about nuclear waste? Investigate
this topic!
Topic 3: Helth consequences
of the Cernobyl accident
Assess the health consequences
and claims of such consequences of the Cernobyl accident.
