KJM-MENA3120 – Inorganic Chemistry II - Materials and Applications

Course content

The course focuses on five key topics in inorganic and materials chemistry and provides a solid background for students who intend to continue with master degree studies within inorganic, materials or nanochemistry. The main topics are; thermodynamics, electrochemistry, structure - property relations, reactivity and finally symmetry and molecular properties.

Learning outcome

After?completing?this course:

  • you have insight into equilibria of gas species and understand the basis for non-stoichiometry of oxides
  • you understand the electrochemical basis for functioning of batteries and fuel cells
  • you have insight into the atomic arrangement of some important inorganic structure types
  • you understand crystal structure - physical property relations for some functional inorganic materials
  • you know basic principles for reactivity of inorganic molecules and compounds
  • you are able to use concepts of symmetry to describe geometry of inorganic molecules and ions, as well rationalize magnetic properties of complex ions
  • you can use various software for simulations of gas equilibria, thermodynamics, electronic properties of complex ions, as well for visualizing inorganic crystal structures.

Admission to the course

Students at UiO register for courses and exams in Studentweb.

Special admission requirements

In addition to fulfilling the?Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2

And in addition one of these:

  • Physics (1+2)
  • Chemistry (1+2)
  • Biology (1+2)
  • Information technology (1+2)
  • Geosciences (1+2)
  • Technology and theories of research (1+2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by?equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies?(in Norwegian).

KJM1121 – Inorganic Chemistry and KJM1130 – Physical Chemistry I - Thermodynamics and Kinetics, or equivalent courses. In addition MENA3001 – Functional Materials might be useful.

Teaching

The teaching is divided into five different parts, each of three weeks?duration. There are 3 lectures a week for 15 weeks in all. There are also 3 weekly seminar hours. One third of these will involve the use of mathematical simulation tools with applications in various parts of the curriculum.

This?course has?2 mandatory assignments that must be?approved before you can sit?the final exam. Approved assignments are valid six semesters after the semester they were approved.

It is mandatory to participate in seminars about mathematical simulation tools. Valid absence has to be documented by showing a doctor?s declaration to the student administration at The Department of Chemistry. It is also mandatory attendance at the first lecture. If you are prevented from attending the first lecture, you must inform The Department of Chemistry no later than the same day in order to keep your place in the course.

Examination

  • Final?written exam, 4 hours,?which counts 100% towards the final grade.

Two?mandatory assignments must be approved before you can sit?the final exam. Approved assignments are valid six semesters after the semester they were approved.

Examination support material

Calculator

The calculator must fulfill the requirements specified by The Department of Mathematics (only in Norwegian).

Language of examination

Subjects taught in English will offer the exam paper in Norwegian and English. You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
