Activities: Lectures in UV-visible spectroscopy, laboratory tutorials and exercises, written reports from laboratory work.
Learning requirements: The student is expected to show:
- Basic understanding of the principles of electronic spectra of molecules.
- Basic understanding of the working principle of UV-visible spectrometers.
- Understanding of the Beer-Lambert law.
- Basic understanding of the concept of ”chromophores”.
- Ability to predict molecular absorption in the 200–1100 nm range qualitatively.
- Basic knowledge of solvent effects.
- Ability to record UV-visible spectra including quantitative measurements.
Evaluation: Passed/failed based upon written laboratory reports. All exercises must be completed and accepted before October 14.
Schedule:
Thursday 29 September:
- 13.15-15.00: Lecture in basic UV spectroscopy, V254.
Friday 30 September:
- 09.15-14.00: Hands on demonstration of the UV-Vis instrument. Groups of two students (1 h each group).
The laboratory will be open for exercises 09.15-17.00 Monday 3 October to Wednesday 12 October:
