KJM1011 – Organic Chemistry 1
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
Structure, bonds and stereochemistry of organic compounds. Simple nomenclature. Acids and bases. Reactions of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides, alcohols, fenols and amines. Identification of organic compounds by spectroscopic methods. Basic laboratory techniques and some important reactions will be covered by the laboratory course.
Learning outcome
The student will get an overview of structure and reactivity of organic compounds.

Prerequisites
Recommended previous knowledge
KJM1000 – Introduction to chemistry (discontinued) or a similar background in Chemistry.
Teaching
The course comprises 30 hours of lectures, 2*12 hours of plenum exercises and a mandatory laboratory course of 49 hours (7 exercises). The laboratory course has to be approved before a student can take part in the final examination.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Language of examination
You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
