Course content
KJM2600 gives an introduction to the quantum-chemical description of atoms, molecules, and solids and the fundamentals of molecular spectroscopies (UV/VIS, IR, MW, Raman, NMR, EPR) and statistical thermodynamics.
Learning outcome
After completing the course:

- you understand the principles of molecular spectroscopies

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

And in addition one of these:
- Physics (1+2)
- Chemistry (1+2)
- Biology (1+2)
- Information technology (1+2)
- Geosciences (1+2)
- Technology and theories of research (1+2)
The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).
Recommended previous knowledge
KJM1100 - General Chemistry, and a knowledge in mathematics equivalent to MAT1012 - Mathematics 2.

Teaching
The course comprises 45 hours of lectures, 35 hours of group seminars and a mandatory laboratory course of 20 hours (5 exercises). The laboratory course and minimum 60% of group seminars must be approved before a student may sit for the final exam.
A completed and approved laboratory course is valid for six semesters beyond the semester it was approved. After this period, you must complete the laboratory course again to be able to sit for the final examination.
The first lecture is mandatory, as are all the laboratory exercises. If you are unable to attend the first lecture, you must notify the Department of Chemistry’s Reception, ph. 22 85 54 46, or ekspedisjonen@kjemi.uio.no, before the start of the lecture, otherwise you will risk losing your place on the course.
As the teaching involves laboratory and/or field work, you should consider taking out a separate travel and personal risk insurance. Read about your insurance cover as a student.
Examination
Written final exam (4 hours) counts 100%. The laboratory course and minimum 60% group seminars must be approved before a student may sit for the final exam.

The calculator must fulfill the requirements specified by The Department of Mathematics (only in Norwegian).
Language of examination
You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
Other
Abscence from compulsory laboratory teaching must be documented according to the rules which apply to exams, e.g. by valid attestation from medical doctor in the case of illness.
